Troubleshooting Common Electrical Issues

The holidays can be stressful for quite a few reasons, but home electrical issues shouldn't be one of them. Increased use of household appliances can cause electrical mishaps to pop up more often than usual. Read David Gray Electrical Services' tips to help you determine whether you can DIY or if your problem requires a professional.

Power Outages

First, check to see if the power is still working anywhere else in your home. If the power is out in only one area of your house, check the breaker box for a tripped circuit breaker.  If a breaker is tripped, turn it off and then back on. If you don't see a tripped breaker, try resetting all of the breakers. If the breaker continues to trip after being reset, call an electrician.

Faulty Outlets

If you think an electrical outlet isn't working, first examine the appliance you are trying to plug in. If the device works with another outlet, check your circuit breakers. If everything seems to be working, but one outlet is still malfunctioning, it may be burned out and require professional help.

If the malfunctioning outlet is a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlet, it may simply need to be reset. GFCIs protect against surges by cutting power in damp areas such as near sinks or in bathrooms. These almost always include a reset button located on the outlet, so try toggling the button before calling an electrician.

Burnt Out Lightbulbs

Changing a light bulb is an easy fix 95 percent of the time, but it is still important to be cautious. Turn off the power to the socket before you put in a new lightbulb. Make sure you wait a few minutes for the burnt-out bulb to cool off before changing it, and always use the correct wattage to avoid a similar issue. If you are using the correct bulb and it goes out again or smells like it is burning, call an electrician to check for unsafe surges.
