Slice Your Summer Electric Bill with These Tips

With temperatures heating up and kids out of school, a higher electric bill may seem inevitable. But just because the temperatures are rising doesn't mean your bills have to. Follow these tips to stay cool this summer while saving on your utilities.

1. Manage consumption. Air conditioning is one of the major reasons for high energy use, but you can save significantly by making a few small changes. When you're at home, set the thermostat at 78 degrees or higher, and turn it up to 82 degrees when you're on vacation or no one is home. Another option is to install a programmable thermostat to adjust the temperature automatically.

Instead of relying solely on your air conditioning to cool down, increase your comfort by using ceiling fans that rotate counterclockwise. Consider having an electrician add a ceiling fan to rooms without one to stay cool throughout your home.

2. Upgrade appliances. New appliances are more energy efficient than older models and will save on your electric bill over time. If you are in the market for a major appliance, look for one that is Energy Star-rated. You can also save by updating minor appliances, like televisions, hair dryers, toasters and blenders. Even if you're not ready to upgrade, always unplug appliances and turn off lights when not in use. It may seem small, but it adds up to major savings.

3. Fix electrical issues. Although people repair major electric issues like power loss, it's easy to let smaller ones fall to the wayside. But issues like sparking outlets, faulty breaker panels or improperly running pool pumps can drain electricity over time. An experienced electrician will be able to inspect and fix any electrical issues in your home.
