How Often Should Your Pool Electrical System Be Checked?

Let a Professional Electrician Handle the Job

This check-up of a pool's electrical system cannot be performed by homeowners. Master electricians can repair potentially dangerous problems such as faulty wiring in the pool's light, which led to the electrocution of the young Miami boy. Faulty wiring can allow water to get into the light itself creating the potential for deadly consequences.

An experienced electrician can check that the wiring has a continuous ground and that pool lights have a separate grounding system. Duval County's building and zoning department cautions homeowners against performing any inspections or repairs on their own electrical system.

Since 1990, there have been 60 cases of electrocutions and almost 50 serious electrical shocks that have involved swimming pools, according to the U.S. Product Safety Commission and the American Red Cross. Children and adults can be killed due to an electrical shock and if a homeowner or adult suspects that someone in the pool is being shocked, the first step is to turn off the power and then call 9-1-1. Water is an excellent conductor of electricity and without turning off the power, any rescuer could potentially become a victim.

When to Schedule an Appointment

Swimming pools or spas in general should be checked and tested every year before swimming season begins. It is important to schedule a periodic inspection of the electrical system of a pool at regular intervals. This helps homeowners determine is there has been any prior defective electrical work, if there are potential shock risks, overloaded circuits or pump equipment or a lack of necessary earthing or bonding. An electrician should check the pool's system before a property may be rented out, or prior to selling or buying a property with a pool. Registered electricians are among the only professionals qualified to inspect and test a pool's electrical system.

Any electrical system may deteriorate over time. And with Florida prone to frequent lightning strikes and power surges this may leave homeowners at risk for damage to their pool or hot tub. In order to keep friends and family safe when using the pool or hot tub, it is important to ensure that all systems are in good condition, repairs are compliant with safety standards and any damage or defects have been addressed. Any issues should be scheduled for repair immediately and the pool should not be used until after repairs are made.
